Talk on Witchcraft – Friday 8th April 2022
Stirling Council’s Archivist, Pam McNicol will share the stories taken from primary sources dating from the time of these supposed practitioners of the dark arts. These records give details of testimonies taken directly from those accused and give a fascinating insight into the fears and superstitions of this turbulent time in Scotland’s history. The talk will be illustrated with examples of the records surviving and held at the Council Archives in Stirling. Click here for more details.

Dollar Historic Walks – Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September 2022
Last year we held walks as part of the Doors Open Days 2021 in Clackmannanshire event. It was a great success with groups of people joining us on a guided walk round Dollar – viewing places of historic interest. Two different walks are planned this year. Saturday 24th – Dollar Mining Walk: The walk will begin at Dollar Museum, where an excellent new working model can be seen of Dollar Mine, which was sunk to the east of the town by Alloa Coal Company at the end of 1942, opened in 1943 and closed in 1973. And on Sunday 25h September – Dollar Place-Names Walk: This is a walk in the past and present, landscape and language, and an attempt to see our environment through the eyes of the people who gave it the names we still use today, many of which are also guides to past languages spoken by those people. It will be led by Dr Simon Taylor, main author of the recently published The Place-Names of Clackmannanshire. The walk will begin at Dollar Museum and will continue to Tait’s Tomb, near Harviestoun, before returning to Dollar via the Devon Way. The difficulty rating of the walk is ‘easy’ and will last approximately 3 hours. At the end, there will be a chance to talk to Dr Taylor at the museum and to purchase a personally inscribed/signed copy of his book. We gather in front of the Museum for a 2.00 pm start on both Saturday and Sunday. Led by local experts. Free – no booking required.
