CLOCK/BELL TOWER

Built in 1879 by John Melvin after winning a competition. It is a Victorian curiosity donated by mill owner James Archibald, as campanile to the 1859 Town Hall (demolished in 1986). The architecture is square at lower stages, rising to a balcony decorated by four tiny turrets, the tower continues as louvred octagon to fur-faced clock and parapet, originally surmounted by cupola.
