39. Muckhart Parish Church
NO 000 009

The earliest documented church was in 1560, which was on the site of the current church and today’s building incorporates some stone from the previous church. The United Parishes (Scotland) Act of 1876, required that a School had to be at the centre of a Parish, therefore Muckhart Primary School lies over half a mile West of the outer edge of Muckhart village.
The church that stands today was built in 1838 and is a ‘B’ listed building. In 2013, the church celebrated its 175th Anniversary of the Building. The last major development, prior to the 2014 refurbishment, was around 1927, when a new entrance was added and a ‘Session Room’ and toilet. The refurbishment in 2014-19 included a roof rebuild and the interior was fully refurbished and modernised, making the building more accessible and providing more facilities for the congregation and visitors.
Its original stained glass windows were removed to Fossoway Church, in Crook of Devon. It contains various memorial plaques. There is a large grave stone on east wall of the church for the Christie family of Cowden and an interesting memorial nearby to Matsui, the Japanese gardener to Miss Ella Christie. In 1987 the congregations of Dollar and Glendevon churches linked with Muckhart. The church operates a community café on certain days, check their website for details.
