Gill Imery joined Lothian & Borders Police in 1986 and served in a variety of uniform and detective officer posts. These included National Drugs Co-ordinator with the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency in 2004; Head of Lothian & Borders Safer Communities Division in 2008; and Detective Chief Superintendent and Head of CID for the force, before the transition to Police Scotland in 2013. She was Assistant, and then appointed as  HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary in Scotland between 2018 and 2022. In 2022 Gill received an Honorary Doctorate from Napier University for her services to policing.
